Analyzing the Impact of Spot Welding Distance in Medium Frequency Spot Welding Machines

In continuous spot welding with a medium frequency spot welding machine, the smaller the spot distance and the thicker the plate, the greater the shunting effect. If the welded material is a highly conductive lightweight alloy, the shunting effect is even more severe. The minimum specified spot distance is mainly considered to mitigate the shunting effect.

When using strong conditions and high electrode pressure, the spot distance can be appropriately reduced. Additionally, when using thermal expansion monitoring or controllers capable of sequentially changing the current at each point, and other devices that can effectively compensate for the shunting effect, the spot distance may not be restricted.

Impact of Welding Sequence: When the welded points are distributed on both sides, the shunting ratio on both sides is greater than when shunting occurs only on one side.

Impact of Workpiece Surface Condition: Poor surface treatment, such as oil contamination and oxide film, increases contact resistance, thereby increasing the total resistance of the welding area. This results in a relative decrease in shunt resistance and an increase in current.

Non-welding area contact between electrode and workpiece: This can sometimes cause significant shunting and even burn the workpiece.

Poor workpiece assembly or overly tight assembly: Excessive contact in non-welding areas can lead to significant shunting.

Impact of Single-sided Spot Welding Process Characteristics: When two welded pieces have the same thickness, if the shunt impedance is smaller than the welding impedance, the shunting will be greater than the current passing through the welding point.
